Famous Catalonians

The history and culture of Costa Brava and the History of Girona go hand in hand. Especially from the Iberian era, and first inhabitants of this coast. Afterwards the Romans caem and with them Greunda was born, today known as Girona in catalonian and Gerona in spanish.

The first references of human life in this area date back to 2500 b.c, in the area of Pinell, where they have found sepulchers from the neolithic era. They have also found an area of mesolithic monuments, such as Menhires and Dolmenes. From there we find clues of the Iberians and the romans.

Before the Roman era there are lots of incluencing factors that the greeks civilizations left in Rosas, and Gulf of Rosa.

After the Roman Era, the coming of Christianity in the 4th and 5th century in this province began reforms of Dioclesiano, they suffered plagues, and around 715, the province fell victim of the Muslim Conquest of the Iberian Penninsula. In this sense me must mention that the muslim domain of this area was weak, and for this reason in the 9th century, Carlomagno took power of this coast.

The 8th century was an important century. The city grew, as well as it´s fortress walls, and above all started developing small localities, fortresses and castles in front of the sea. The conflicts again came in the 19th century when Napoleanic invasions came between the years of 1936 and 1939 with the Spanish Civil War.
From the history of Costa Brava we can begin highlighting the invasions and attacks from pirates throughout the entire coast, for this reason during the 11th and 12th centuries so many vigilant towers were built in this area of Spain.
